Racists left a pig’s head on the doorstep of a mosque late at night. Islamophobic graffiti was also painted on the walls of the Islamic centre in Newtownards, Northern Ireland.
The pig was reportedly left at the mosque at around 11.15pm on Wednesday, while the graffiti was reported to police shortly after 1am.
Both incidents are being treated as hate crimes.
After the incident went viral, Twitter users claimed to have exposed one of the people behind the attack, identifying them by a photo they posted on Facebook of the pig’s head.
The Facebook user had captioned the photo ‘Oh dear, looks like their mosque is out of action,’ followed by four laugh-cry emojis.
Amnesty International’s Northern Ireland programme director Patrick Corrigan said: ‘Our solidarity goes to the local Muslim community, who were the targets of this vile attack, apparently fuelled by a hatred of Islam or of Muslims.
